1. How do I know if I need counselling?

Counselling is broadly defined as a working relationship that helps people get from Point A (where they are now) to Point B (where they want to be). If you are unhappy about where you are at now, or, if you have a preference for where you want to be but are uncertain about how to get there, then counselling may help. Also, if you've been suffering for a long time in spite of your best efforts to cope, then that may signal that it is time to get help. We highly suggest you seek help if you are feeling lonely as recent research has linked loneliness with a variety of illnesses.

2. What if I'm "on the fence" about getting help?

If you're uncertain about getting help, then you are in the majority! Most of us put off our own health. In the end, it's 60 minutes out of your life that could help you a lot.

3. Do you prescribe medications?

No, we do not have prescribing powers but we will consult with your family doctor if medications are an important part of your treatment plan. Psychologists can also work with and refer to Psychiatrists who are medical doctors specializing in mental health concerns.

4. What happens during counselling?
Initially, people report shift in understanding as well as "feeling" better. This may come from having somebody validate your thoughts and feelings or it may come from simply developing new perspectives with regards to your problem and its potential solution. After a few sessions, people often report coming to a new understanding and acceptance of what they need to do to in order to cope with their problems and counselling typically focuses more on behavioural strategies.
