How do I know if I need counselling?

What if I'm on the fence about getting help?

Do you prescribe medications?

How do I know which psychologist to see?

1. How do I know if I need counselling?

Counselling is broadly defined as a working relationship that helps people get from Point A (where they are now) to Point B (where they want to be). If you are unhappy about where you are at now, or, if you have a preference for where you want to be but are uncertain about how to get there, then counselling may help. Also, if you've been suffering for a long time in spite of your best efforts to cope, then that may signal that it is time to get help. We highly suggest you seek help if you are feeling lonely as recent research has linked loneliness with a variety of illnesses.

2. What if I'm "on the fence" about getting help?

If you're uncertain about getting help, then you are in the majority! Most of us put off our own health. In the end, it's 60 minutes out of your life that could help you a lot.

3. Do you prescribe medications?

No, we do not have prescribing powers but we will consult with your family doctor if medications are an important part of your treatment plan. Psychologists can also work with and refer to Psychiatrists who are medical doctors specializing in mental health concerns.

4. How do I know which psychologist to see?

Each psychologist has their own strengths and limitations, including what they specialize in treating. In addition, you are more likely to benefit from seeing someone you can develop a solid relationship with given how important trust and safety are to therapy outcomes. Take a look at our psychologists' profiles in order to see if they may be a good fit for you.
